Job Searching? Here Are 4 Ways You Can Ask Your Network For Help

Asking people in your network to help you get a job is not the only way they can help you. Sometimes people ghost on you just because you ask for a Job. But those same people would be more willing to offer you help that will get you a job eventually.

So a lot of job seekers rather not ask and just keep applying for jobs everywhere hoping that something eventually clicks.

A lot of people in your network might not be in a position to give you a job but they might be able to help in another way that would be beneficial to your job search. So even if they can’t get your resume in front of the right people in their organization, they can help you move a step forward in your quest.

Here Are 4 Alternative Questions To Ask Your Network Besides “Can You Get Me A Job?”

1. “Could You Critique My Resume?”

You might have someone in your network who works in your dream role or in the company you are looking to enter. You could simply ask them to look at your resume and give you feedback. They already know the role/company well. They know what you should highlight and what will limit your chances of getting the job. This kind of feedback from your network is priceless because you are getting firsthand information.

2. “How Did You Make Your Career Change?”

If I got a dollar for every time someone asked me this I’d have been so wealthy. This is a very important question that can help you a lot. If you are looking to change careers/industries etc. the best person to get information from is someone who has done it.

I share my story freely as a source of motivation, I have changed careers more than once and so my experiences with each change helps my students a lot. Asking questions like “what do you wish you knew before making the shift?” or “what do you wish you had done differently?” goes a long way.

It doesn’t even have to be me. Look for people in your network who have trend the path you are looking to go and ask them. Career change can be nerve racking that why I create a lot of content and have been coaching people for almost a decade to help them make the shift smoothly.

3. “Could You Proofread My Resume?”

Proofreading with a fresh pair of eyes is very important. When you write your resume yourself and read it so many times till you know every word by heart, you will miss typos and other mistakes. Asides using a helpful tool like Grammarly in your writing, you should ask someone with an eye for detail to look at your resume. There’s a huge chance they’d find something you may have missed. Better them than your recruiter.

4. “Can You Introduce Me To [So So and So]?”

Doing this will help you tap into the network of the people in your network. Take LinkedIn for example. When you see that someone in your network is connected to someone you’d like to learn from or connect with, It makes sense to ask them to introduce you.

Your request will more likely be welcomed when a mutual friend/acquaintance helps you get your foot in the door. If someone doesn’t know who is hiring or can’t get you a job, they might know someone who is hiring or who might know someone who is hiring.

Putting yourself out there to get a job takes a lot of courage. It’s not easy. You might get ignored or even get a “No” But all that doesn’t matter. If you ask the right questions to get help that people can easily give, you limit the numbers of typical replies like; “I’ll get back to you”, “I’ll let you know when something comes up” and “let me know how I can help”.

Someone people want to help but don’t know how they can. It is your job to make things easy for them.
